2000 Artbox
Simpsons Film Card Set

Notes &Values

The 2000 Artbox Film Card Set was a set of 45 "Regular" Cards and 10 "Foil" Chase Cards.  The cards were anything but "regular".  Each film card was produced on transparent acetate, and held rigid for viewing by a high-quality card stock frame.  In addition, unlike regular trading cards, the edges were slightly rounded rather than straight.  Each Film Card could be viewed by either holding it up to a light or, for high quality viewing,  by putting it inside a special film card viewer that was available as a mail away item.  All you had to do was raise the telescoping lens, insert the Film Card into the viewer and the image was magnified, adding brightness and depth.  The Foil Chase Cards were similar to the regular cards but were far less frequent.  There were 5 cards to a pack and 24 packs to a box.  I believe there were 10 boxes to a case.  The one downside to these cards was that they tended to curl because of the acetate.

As you can see, the back of the cards was simply the image in reverse.  Therefore, I didn't bother scanning all of the reverse images of the main page.

In addition to the 45 Regular Cards and the 10 Foil Chase Cards which were "randomly inserted", there was also a Very Krusty Contest.  "Winning Cards" were randomly inserted.  Here are the details:

In case you can't read it clearly, the odds of winning were:
One First Prize: (1:240,000 packs)
20 Second Prizes: (1:12,000 packs)
500 Third prizes: (1:480 packs)

I have never heard of anyone winning any of the prizes and have never seen any of the winning cards.  If you, or anyone you know, actually won any of the prizes, please get in contact with me at yale@donthaveacowman.com.  I would love to hear about it and see what the winning cards looked like.

In addition, you could mail away and get a Film Card Viewer.  Here are the details:

 Film Card Viewer Details

Each Film Card Viewer came with one film card already inserted in the viewer and an unopened pack of 5 other cards.

The Promo Cards:  There were 3 promo cards in this series.  None of them had numbers but they could be distinguished (in addition to the actual card) by the color of the border and the little picture on the bottom right of the card.  I have scanned each corner below.   It is interesting to note that the only promo "picture" that ended up being used on the base set was the "Nuclear Family" (cards 37-45...see below).  "Homer Playing Golf" was hardest to get as it was a UK release.
Family in the Car
Family Standing Around
Homer Playing Golf

The Base Set of Cards:  The base set was sort of divided into 7 sets.  The only difference was the color of the border and the little picture on the bottom right of the card.
Cards 1 - 7 were "Homer" Cards.
Cards 8 - 11 were "Krusty" Cards.
Cards 12 - 18 were "Bart Sk8" Cards
Cards 19 - 23 were Lisa "Smart Girls" Cards
Cards 24 - 31 were "Springfield Citizen" Cards
Cards 32 - 36 were "Moe" Cards
Cards 37 - 45 were "Nuclear Family" Cards

The Foil (Chase) Set of Cards:  The foil cards were a bit of a disappointment.  The only difference was in the border (which was sort of foil but not really) and the little picture at the bottom of each card.  Don't feel bad if you can't see the scan too well.  The actual picture of the card isn't all that easy to see either.  It is a scary looking Bart Head by the way.  As mentioned above, these cards were inserted far less frequesntly than the regular cards.
Foil Cards 1 - 10.

Uncut Card Sheets:  Artbox also offered a limited number of uncut card sheets.  There were a total of 5 sheets with 9 cards on each sheet.  I believe the cards were sold on the UK version on QVC.  I am not sure how many were released.  Like the uncut card sheets from other cards series, they make great collection pieces because once they are framed and hung, they are very colorful.
