There really is not much to say about this set other than it was the very first set of Simpsons Trading Cards. It was produced back in 1990 and is generally thought to be the least favorite set of trading cards amongst Simpsons Fans. All 88 cards and 22 stickers are of the 5 Simpsons. There are no supporting cast members. There is, however, some charm to them in that the characters have a very crude "Tracy Ullman" like look to them.
On the back of 40 of the cards are pieces to a puzzle. The back of a few cards (25, 84, 85 and 87) show what the final picture will look like. It's almost the entire cast at a miniature gold course. The other cards have trivia questions on them (Bart's Bafflers, Lisa Lowdown, Marge's Mindbenders, Homer's Homeroom and Maggie's Mutterings).
1990 TOPPS SERIES - 40 Card Puzzle
|
This is what the completed puzzle looks like. Pieces were found on the back of 40 of the 88 cards. The picture of the completed puzzle was found on 4 of the cards.
Each packet comes with one sticker (and
yes, contrary to what you might have read in the past...they really are
stickers...even though there are a few web sites out there that claim they are
not stickers).
The stickers were the early versions of chase cards. The front of each sticker
has a picture and the back has a blackboard saying.
WAIT JUST A
SECOND...WHAT'S THIS???
Apparently, there was a UK version of this set that was released.
The cards look almost identical to the US version except for the fact that the card stock is white and not gray and the size and positioning of Matt Groening's signature on the back. I have included a picture below so you can see the difference.

No, your eyes are not playing tricks on you and no, I did not adjust the lighting. The card on the left is on white stock (UK) and the card on the right is gray (US).
The stickers are the exact same picture and color. The only difference is the size. The US version is the same as a normal trading card (3 1/2 x 2 1/2) while the UK version is smaller (3 x 2 1/8). I am fortunate to have both sets.

I have heard there may be other foreign set(s) of these cards in other languages besides English but so far I do not have any nor have I ever seen them.
I also have a sealed box and the promo poster for this series along with a couple of wrappers.
Finally, recently several uncut sheets and part of sheets have surfaced. There is at least one variety (and probably more) of complete uncut sheets. It contains 132 cards and all of them are from the base set. The funny thing is that all of the 88 cards are not o the sheet so there has to be at least one other uncut sheet but I have never seen it. It is possible the other cards were printed on a sheet along with cards from another set. There are also strips of 3 stickers circulating. I am not sure how many there are and in what combination they came but I was able to acquire three of them.
